Secretary Candidates

Mason Barlow is in his eleventh year as a choir director for the Arlington High School choral department, this being his eighth year as head director.

At Arlington High, Mr. Barlow directs the varsity mixed choir Colt Chorale, as well as their show choir and chamber choir. During his tenure, choirs have performed at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, the National Cathedral in Washington DC, and Bass Hall Home for the Holidays. Choirs under his direction consistently receive sweepstakes at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest. His Varsity Tenor/Bass Choir has been invited to perform at the 2021 TMEA convention.

Mr. Barlow received his Bachelor of Music degree and his Master of Educational Leadership from The University of Texas at Arlington. He has served Region V in various capacities including Region Vocal Chair from 2017-2020. He has also been a Region and District Choir section leader. Mr. Barlow is currently a member of TMEA, TCDA, and ACDA.

If Elected: Since my first year of teaching, I have been fortunate to have an organization like TCDA to nurture growth, musicianship, and professionalism. The start of my school year would be incomplete without its annual convention to inspire and energize prior to the return of students. I am humbled to be nominated and would be honored to serve in an organization that has given so much to me. If elected to the TCDA Board, I will work to ensure this organization continues to foster innovation, creativity, and professional growth among its membership. Among the many things I have learned over the years is that we are all stronger together. I have been fortunate to have many mentors and colleagues to guide me in my career, and it is organizations like TCDA that create these teaching opportunities and foster these unique relationships that make us each better. It is my hope as we grow and adapt to newer, advanced ways of honing our craft, that TCDA will be at the forefront of that innovation, and you will allow me to help serve you and this organization as it does.

Nicholas Likos is in his twelfth year as a music educator in Texas public schools and in his fifth year as the Head Choir Director at Cy-Fair High School. Nicholas taught at Cypress Ranch High School as the Assistant Choir Director for six years and Dekaney High School in Spring for two years before coming to Cy-Fair. Nicholas is a sought-after clinician and adjudicator around the state of Texas, and he has consistently received UIL Sweepstakes and best-in-class festival awards during his career.

Nicholas has presented staff development for several districts and clinics for various state conferences including TCDA. Nicholas enjoys giving back to the organization that provides so much advocacy to the teachers it serves. Recently, Nicholas directed Cy-Fair Singers to win the 2019 American Classic Madrigal Festival. Cy-Fair Singers gave their honor concert performance entitled, “Thankful: A Way to Live Life” to the choirs who competed in the 2020 festival. Nicholas was also awarded Teacher of the Year at Cy-Fair High School for the 2019-20 school year.

If Elected:  I am honored to be nominated for TCDA Secretary! I feel blessed to have grown up as a teacher in this organization, and I would relish the opportunity to tangibly give back to it as well. I love working behind the scenes and serving others! My knack for being detail-oriented and organized will play well into the role of Secretary.

I would like to see the organization utilize technology more to help TCDA serve its members throughout the year. The landscape of music education is changing fast. TCDA must be on the front lines when it comes to that change. As Secretary, it would be my honor to serve you as you serve your students!
