There are no words..., by Dan Baker, Church Vice President

"Did you hear about the...?"

"I heard. Awful."

"I can't even..."

"I know, right?"

"How does anyone...?"

"I know...I mean..."

You may have heard a similar conversation recently. What was your first response to learning of the news? Grief? Fear? Despair? Uncertainty? How was worship at your church the Sunday after? How was choir rehearsal? Did your students talk about it? In these moments, everyone reacts a little differently. I fear in our society that events like the one in Sutherland Springs, Texas have become so seemingly commonplace that we don't react at all. Or, in an effort to find answers, we over-politicize or interject our opinions trying to comprehend the incomprehensible.

So, what should I say?

Sometimes, when there are truly no right words to say, we need the reminder that there are texts already prepared for us. The Psalmists of the Old Testament come to our aid when we cannot find ways to express what we feel in times of grief and loss. Familiar hymns and songs are wonderful, but the texts of the Biblical record, the word of God communicate it best. And, of course, for us, friends and colleagues, the language we love, choral music, allows those texts to soothe the soul. They are, after all, words from a songbook.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear
Psalm 46

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91

I lift up my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; O Lord, hear my voice. Psalm 130

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise...
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. Psalm 139

Are you singing yet? Find the Psalm settings in your choral library or hymnbook. When faced with an utter loss for words, and a need to cry out to the Creator, sing the Psalms.
