Happy Graduation! by Jeff Rice, Past President

Graduation is just around the corner! As I write this article, my memory is fresh from watching my daughter receive her Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy from the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. Watching her and her classmates celebrate after three years of rigorous study was enormously gratifying, and I am sure many of you are familiar with that feeling of pride as we see our children walk across the stage.

The word graduation can also apply to other life situations.  For many TCDA members, graduation may mean leaving one job for another, retiring from the music education profession to pursue a life of leisure and travel, or returning to school to seek a higher degree to further your career. In short, graduation is finishing one phase of your life and moving on to the next adventure. It is a big deal!

After seven years of service on the TCDA Board of Directors, I am GRADUATING after the convention this summer! In 2005 I began serving on the TCDA Board as High School/College Vice-President. After the first year of the two-year term, the position was changed to High School Vice-President as the offices were restructured. Following a two-year hiatus, I served as President-Elect one year, and then President and Past President, each a term of two years, from 2010-2015.

A debt of gratitude is owed to all who paved the way before me. Serving along with past presidents Michael O’Hern, Danny Detrick, Bob Horton, Amy Allibon, and current president, Billy Talley, has been a privilege and an honor. There are many other special board members whose dedication and expertise made my time on the board some of the most rewarding years of my professional life. It has been an honor to serve this wonderful organization.

We could also say that TCDA has graduated in many ways. In recent years we have made significant changes to the way we do business. Sharon Lutz was hired to be our new Executive Director, and TCDA joined with TBA and TODA to create one of the largest music trade shows in the nation. These two major changes were brought about by the work of many board members over the past several years. I am grateful to have been a part of TCDA during this special time.

Childcare Information and Guidelines

Childcare is complimentary to our members during the convention for children 12 yrs and younger. This convenient, on-site service is provided by Fit For A King. They have over 20 years of experience and are bonded for your protection.  They are also trained in CPR and First Aid.

Thursday 10:00am - 10:00pm**Friday 7:30am - 10:00pm**Saturday 7:30am - 10:00pm**Sunday 8:00am - noon

Please read the suggestions below and come prepared to ensure a smooth process for you and your children.

  • Plan to take strollers with you, as there is no extra space in the childcare rooms to store them.
  • No meals are provided or served. Snacks of raisins, Cheerios, cookies and punch are served mid-morning and mid-afternoon. You can bring snacks for your own child, labeled and with instructions. Parents must pick up children for each meal and no other foods will be allowed in the room.
  • Please take children to the restroom prior to bringing them to childcare. Bring extra, labeled clothes for young children.
  • Allow sufficient time for registration and instructions. Have all instructions in writing. Label everything that comes with your child (bag, wipes, diapers [no cloth diapers], pacifiers, etc...)
  • Please list the sessions you will attend with room numbers so we can reach you if there is an emergency.
  • Age appropriate toys are provided. Please do not bring personal toys.
  • Ill children will not be admitted. Parents will be called to pick up children that hit, bite or are inconsolable for long periods.
  • Quiet times are from 1:15pm to 3:30pm and 8:30pm until closing. No children will be admitted during these times and all who are inside will rest quietly.  No exceptions. Children may be picked up any time.
  • Parents who do not pick up children by posted closing times will be charged $10 per each minute late per child.
