It's an Elementary Honor Choir this year!, by Debra Johnson, Elementary Vice President

Happy 2018!  The start of a new year brings new hopes, dreams and the beginning of the 2018 TCDA Elementary Honor Choir.  The incredible TCDA staff has already been hard at work preparing for the honor choir and the convention.  Now it's YOUR turn!

Excite your students with this opportunity to be part of a state-wide choir.  The Honor Choir is made up of students who will have COMPLETED 4th - 6th grade this May/June.  They will have the time of their lives being surrounded with other motivated enthusiastic singers creating beautiful music.  Ruth Dwyer is an internationally recognized teacher and director who will provide a true learning experience that will be challenging, meaningful, and FUN.

It is simple to invite your students to audition for this Choir. Each TCDA member can sponsor up to 10 students. You can also enlist the help of your Junior High and High School Directors to sponsor additional students from your school. Detailed information about the process and cost can be found at http://www.tcda.net/2018-honor-choir. The cost is only $15 to apply. Students are responsible for their own living and travel expenses if they are accepted into the Choir.

Some tips to make your application process successful:

  1. Teach your entire class or Choir the Jubilate Deo! if they don't already know it.  Something to remember for future years -  teach it at the beginning of the school year  - it's a great way to get your class or choir singing those beautiful tall vowels! Practice it enough that students feel very comfortable with the piece. Make a recording for them to practice at home.  Singing in front of a mirror can help get rid of "corners!"
  2. Your students should be as musical as possible when singing. Avoid using a "pop style". Tall, pure and focus tones are best.
  3. FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! Any submission that does not follow the clear instructions may not be considered.
  4. Be sure that you are not overpowering the student during the round.
  5. Refer to the PDF version at the bottom of the Honor Choir page for a hard copy of the information that you can send home with students.
  6. Please, no special effects (like performance hall in Garage Band, etc.) while recording.
  7. The Honor Choir selection is completely anonymous. The panel will not know the student's name or what school he/she is from.

We are so excited for another spectacular Honor Choir. Thank you for being a part of History! Please do not hesitate to contact the TCDA office at [email protected] if you have any questions at all!

The TCDA board would like to share some of their favorites with you periodically.  This month's selection, courtesy of Debra Johnson.  Thanks Debra!

"I like to keep up with music that's being written by living "post-classical" composers.  A nightly program called "New Sounds" (www.newsounds.org) is broadcast/podcast by WNYC out of New York City.  The February 8 program featured haunting, mind-stretching, hair-raising works for female voices. ://www.newsounds.org/ story/4078-works-female- voices-davachi-sf-girls-chorus.

Here's another great program that aired on New Sounds

I never get tired of Ruthie Foster singing Don't You Mind People Grinnin' in Your Face. Ruthie grew up in Milam County which neighbors Bell County where I'm from. I've heard her several times here in Temple.  I enjoy supporting Texas artists.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZzAhYESolM

TCDA supports the international copyright laws for music publications and all directors should be aware of these laws regarding permission to use, copy, perform, etc...music that is protected under these laws.  We encourage all directors to be mindful and follow copyright laws.
