No Regrets!, by Connie Horton, MS/JH Vice President

Our 2017 convention is jam-packed with inspiring clinics, great reading sessions, fun performance opportunities, time with friends, and time to shop at the exhibits.  If you miss the 2017 TCDA Convention, you will definitely regret it!  Register now!

The wonderful and renowned Dr. Derrick Fox, Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, is our featured clinician and conductor of the 2017 TCDA MS/JH Honor Choir.  Dr. Fox will lead the honor choir through a variety of exciting music, and the concert promises to be a treat for all who attend.  Dr. Fox will also share his wisdom with the membership in a workshop setting.

A special treat for our members will be a session presented by Henry Leck titled Strategies for Using 2 and 3-part Treble Music in the Middle School. Learn from a choral master on how to handle a boy's changing voice, imbalanced voice parts, and students who have trouble matching pitch.

Are you looking for your ticket off the struggle bus?  If so, be sure to attend Brain-Friendly Teaching: Your Ticket Off the Struggle Bus! presented by master teachers Sally Schott and Jan Juneau.  If your struggle is with teaching General Music or Music Appreciation, you will not want to miss Don't Hate:  Appreciate!  Making the Most out of your General Music and Music Appreciation Classes with J. R. Smith.

Kelly McDonald will present her session I Have Confidence in Mi:  Play and Practice Strategies for Beginners.  If you would like to know more about choir pageants and other ways to reach the reluctant and/or beginning singer, this session is tailored for you.  Kelly will also give insights on how to build confidence in your singers.

Stressed about TTESS?  Looking for ways to enhance student creativity, student-centered learning, and differentiate instruction?  If so, look no further. We have two great sessions for you.  Bethany Stuard will present From Compliant Choirs to Creative Musicians in which she will discuss strategies and activities that will facilitate inventiveness and leadership in our students.  Heather Bolin, Kelly Morgan, Matt Spitsberg and Alyssa Guerra will inspire us to use music stations to maximize learning and differentiate instruction in the choral classroom through their session Centered on Learning:  Using Learning Centers in the Secondary Choral Classroom

All of this and reading sessions too!  Our reading sessions will be conducted by Courtney Kelly, Jonathan Pilgrim, and Amy Moss.

The TCDA Board has planned a great convention for all divisions.  If you know a school or church choir director or elementary music teacher who has not attended TCDA in the past, please encourage them to make this their first year.  They will not be disappointed.

TCDA Honor Choir Auditions FAQs

  1. What do you sing the scales on?  Solfege or neutral syllable?  The students can sing the scales on whatever is most comfortable for them.  There is no preference.
  2. What about the good singers who cannot sing all the notes of the scales?  Keep the tempo marked.  Play the starting pitch and have the student audiate the notes they cannot sing. It is okay if they come in on the second or third scale degree.
