Easter People  by Joshua Taylor, Church Division Vice President

"We are an Easter people living in a Good Friday World." - from Splashes of Joy in a Cesspool World by Barbara Johnson

Happy Eastertide to my church colleagues, blessings on your Passover preparations to my Jewish friends, well-wishes for Ramadan readiness to my Muslim colleagues, and for those of you schoolteachers preparing for UIL and spring concerts- sustaining prayers for peace!

For those of us from the Christian tradition, we find ourselves in the great 50 days- that time between a glorious Easter morning, rejoicing in the good news of Christ's resurrection power, and preparing for the celebration of Pentecost! I don't know about you but it is one of my favorite times during the church year. Most frequently, we have familiar, comforting scripture passages from the lectionary during Eastertide. At First Presbyterian Church of Dallas that means some of our most beloved choral anthems to accompany things like Psalm 23 on "Good Shepherd Sunday" and a heavy dose of hymn favorites like "Joyful, Joyful" and "Christ is Alive" billowing forth from the organ. Like the disciples in the book of Acts, things are great! Christ is risen! Let all the world in every corner sing!

In the world of Jesus' disciples, however, things are about to change. Jesus ascends up into heaven leaving them staring up into the sky bewildered about what happens next. "Why do you stand looking up toward heaven?" the story continues. I can imagine the two men in white robes adding "We've only just begun!" In Acts chapter two, we arrive at the Pentecost story. This birth of the church event was the coming together of people from all over the place which, empowered by the Holy Spirit, started something that would turn the world upside down! It was such a celebration that onlookers assumed someone was passing out extra drink tickets at this theological soiree! Christ's resurrection and ascension did not end the story but closed one chapter of the greatest story ever told and began a new one.

Maybe you've been like one of the disciples standing there, looking to the sky, and asking the question "what's next?" Friend, I tell you, we've only just begun. We may be living in a fearful and broken world where all too often we are consumed by our calendars, discontent, and worry BUT we know the power of the resurrection. We know the power of the Spirit. As TCDA members (regardless of faith tradition) we know music IS our Easter and TCDA IS our Pentecost. It is the gathering of folks from all over the place who are bold enough to believe that what we do, what God empowers us to do CAN change the world.

(For my Baptist colleagues, you would probably insert the altar call here, right? So maybe I should remind everyone that they too can join us by visiting www.tcda.net to register?)

For 60 years, TCDA has been a bastion for those of us who believe in the power of choral music. Our Diamond Jubilee was a wonderful celebration that begins a new chapter that just might change the world. You'll want to invite your church singers to participate in the Church Division Festival Chorus under the direction of Dr. Rosephanye Powell. This news is too good to keep to ourselves.

See you at the Soiree!
