We hope you have found the resources that TCDA has been collecting to assist our membership during the COVID-19 crisis to be helpful for you and your singers. We continue to develop these resources and encourage you to reach out to TCDA if you see other ways in which your organization can support you during this difficult time. As you know, as a choral director only a small percentage of the work you do is actually conducting a choir and teaching music. The vast majority of our work has to do with creating community, allowing for individual expression, creating aesthetic experiences for singers and audiences, and simply taking care of the family of singers that surrounds us both musically and emotionally. The TCDA Board and staff view our membership through this same lens and we want you to know that we are hard at work trying to support our choral family. To this end, the Board of Directors held a special meeting on Wednesday, March 26 to address the current stresses and future implications of the COVID-19 on the activities of TCDA.
Following much discussion the Board is taking the following actions:
Elementary Honor Choir and MS/JH All-State Choir
Due to current school closures and varied resources across our state, meeting any imminent deadline for auditions is impossible for many of our teachers, creating a great deal of inequity in this competitive process; therefore, the board voted unanimously to end all honor choir and all-state auditions effective immediately. All paid audition fees will be refunded in full. We will begin processing these refunds by Monday, March 30. Refunds will be issued to the person or entity that made the original payment. Cash payments will be refunded back to the family via a TCDA check.
In an effort to continue to provide a singing experience for our students, we will be converting both of these ensembles to non-auditioned, Festival Choirs with a new registration process.
Registration will open on May 11 and close on June 1
Registrations will be time-stamped (first come/first serve) until we reach capacity. When a section reaches capacity, you may request to be added to the waitlist without submitting payment.
Singers will register and pay a $90 festival choir fee
Our clinicians will remain the same, Rollo Dilworth and Danny Gutierrez
The TCDA Elementary Festival Choir will be composed of 150 singers in two parts
The TCDA MS/JH Festival Choir will be composed of 232 singers in four parts
We hope this opportunity will provide a wonderful choral experience for our young singers during this time. For some dealing with prolonged school closures, this may be the first opportunity the students have to sing in an ensemble again. We hope that you will encourage the participation of your best singers.
Extension of Upcoming Deadlines
Registration for the 2021 Directors Chorus Tour to Central Europe will be pushed ahead by 1 month, now opening on June 1, 2020.
The scholarship application deadline of March 31 has been extended to April 15.
We fully expect the 2020 summer convention to proceed as planned in July. We have been in close contact with the City of San Antonio, our vendors, hotels, and other organizations planning conventions during the same time period and are confident in our ability to move forward. Understanding the uncertainty surrounding future events and travel, we have updated our refund policy for both attendees and vendors. In the unlikely event that the summer convention must be canceled, TCDA will process full refunds of convention fees.
We recognize that choral directors, and truly all people worldwide, are navigating through an unprecedented situation. Both the ingenuity and tenacity of our membership are on full display as we each work through this. Our time together at this summer’s convention will be essential this year as it will provide the community, development, support, and opportunity to make music together that we are all missing during this time. We hope you will make it a priority to join our choral family in San Antonio this July.
